Canals : Canal Construction

An advance of 60m per day was achieved during the construction of this 1300m canal.
This was achieved by providing relatively simple equipment and teaching local labour how to use it effectively.

(1) Shutters are installed in the trench after it has been dug to the correct width and gradient.

(2) Base concrete is placed in the trench to a predetermined height.


(3) Profiled sheets made from fibre reinforced mortar are installed in the trench.

(4) The profiled sheets are encased in concrete.
