Canals : Offtake Points

Farmers along the canal have offtake points consisting of a hole in the canal's floor that directs the water down and sideways.

(1) A 100mm galvanised elbow may be used to
create an offtake. The hole in the floor exits on the side, in the base of the canal. A 100mm screw-in
plug is used to close/open the offtake as required.

(2) The height of the water (the head) may be increased by placing a temporary 'weir' just downstream of the offtake. Thus substantial flows of water are achievable out of the 100mm hole, ideal for furrow irrigation.


(3) Fittings suitable for various pipe sizes may be screwed to the outlet. If the pipe goes downhill for some distance it is even possible to generate substantial pressures in the pipe, for microsprinkler or drip irrigation.
