Water for Communities (click on underlined links to navigate to one page brochures)
It has often been observed that 'if you give a hungry man a fish to eat, he may be grateful, but he will be hungry the next day' (and a dependency may be created). Whereas, 'if you give the man the necessary fishing tackle and teach him how to fish he (and his family) will never be hungry again'.
The desire to help destitute rural communities by providing them with infrastructure for storing and conveying water so that they can grow their own vegetables was the founding vision of Dams for Africa, and is still a core value. Some of the 'fishing tackle' that the company has provided includes the design and construction/rehabilitation of :
Dam Rehabilitation - outlet structures, crest repair, siphons
Canals - 7 km canal in Tongwane Gorge, 1500m canal in Mabintwane
Weirs - diversion weirs, balancing weirs
Spillways - gabion structures, sandbag structures, spillway design
Irrigation - flood irrigation, sprinklers
Rain Water Harvesting - construction of underground reservoirs, inlets, outlets, berms
Documentation - investigations, feasibility studies, business plans, proposals, reports
Note: Generally rehabilitation can be done at a fraction of the cost of replacing with new, and rehabilitation also tends to be more labour intensive, thus providing more jobs locally.
If you know of a community in need & have access to funding but need assistance with investigations, feasibility studies, business plans, proposals, design, rehabilitation/construction/installation, please see 'OUR CONTACT DETAILS' page.
